“Get Your Game On!!!”
Saturday workshop series at the NYU-Poly Game Innovation Lab
This spring we're hosting several day-long technical workshops focused on human computer interaction, novel interfaces, and game development. These events are host by creative experts in the field, FREE, and open to anyone! Students, teachers, gamers civilians are all welcome to come to these events, but hurry and RSVP! Space is limited. Events updates will be posted to the front page of cite.poly.edu
First Up: Unity Bootcamp – February 4, 2012 9am – 5pm
RSVP required: http://polygamelab1.eventbrite.com or by emailing cBrown@poly.edu
Break into creating 3d interactive games and applications with Unity, a cross platform game engine that produces games that can be run on mobile, and personal computers. No previous programing knowledge required (but it helps). “Unity Bootcamp” will get you started with all the basics of creating a game in a modern, easy to use environment.
You will learn how to:
- Navigate and use Unity’s UI
- use game engine physics
- particle effects
- controlling a character in a 3D environment
- importing textures, models, and sounds
- scripting interaction, scoring, and other game-play elements
- Basic animation
- Build a game and export it for web, mac and PC!
Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops with the latest version of unity installed: http://unity3d.com/unity/download/ . Unity works on both mac and PC. There will be a limited amount of PCs available for use.
Second Workshop: One-Button workshop for One-Button Games – Saturday, February 25, 2012 9am – 5pm
RSVP required: cBrown@poly.edu (facebook/eventbrite link coming soon!)
Overview:
Historically buttons have always been confined to specific sizes and spaces like the keyboard, mouse, and the video game controller, but what if they weren't? "One-Button workshop for One-Button Games" hacks every-day human interface devices, like the mouse or the keyboard and turns them into custom video game controllers for one-button games. During this workshop participants will learn how to solder and program their own controllers from scratch.
(no previous programming or soldering skills required).
Third Workshop: Using Adobe Flash with Kinect to create 2d Natural User Interfaces. – Saturday, April 28th, 2012 9am – 5pm
RSVP required: cBrown@poly.edu (facebook/eventbrite link coming soon!)
Required: Basic knowledge of Flash and AS3.
Software for the Kinect will be installed during the class. PC only.
Flash is dead, but is it really? Recently, the hype has all been about how Flash is over. However, this could not be farther for the truth. In fact, Adobe has simply refocused Flash towards application development. Using the same code base, you can simultaneously develop for Kinect, Mac, PC, iOS, Android and the Web. This workshop will focus on using Kinect to create a game in AS3 using Flash Builder. Flash 11 gives users the ability to directly access the GPU. Starling is a simple, easy to use game framework we will use to access the GPU and simplify handling multi-touch events. Many games are now out that have been created using the Starling framework, including Angry Birds and other top iOS games. This powerful frameworks allows real time, 60 fps blazing performance and the best possible performance for Kinect tracking.
We will cover augmented reality, multi-player, multi-touch and skeleton tracking as we create a simple game with these tools. The basics of Natural User Interface design will also be covered.
Updated: For both Mac and PC users.
